Red Bench Photography: Blog https://www.redbenchphotography.com/blog en-us (C)RedBenchPhoto.com (Red Bench Photography) Sat, 17 Jun 2017 14:09:00 GMT Sat, 17 Jun 2017 14:09:00 GMT How to hire a wedding photographer https://www.redbenchphotography.com/blog/2017/6/how-to-hire-a-wedding-photographer 20160911-Leslie-Bridal-8271-220160911-Leslie-Bridal-8271-2 So...you've got the engagement ring and have picked the date and perfect venue, but you're still not sure on what to look for when hiring a Wedding Photographer?  Here are some questions you should ask yourself and your photographer before hiring.

Questions to ask yourself:

  • What style am I looking for?

Are you looking for candid shots capturing people in the moment like a photojournalist?  Or do you prefer Classic, Portraiture, Glamour, Fashion?  You have to ask yourself what you like?

  • How will I use the photos afterward?

Do you want to display large wall art? A collection of framed prints? Do you want an heirloom wedding album? Most people know that they want pictures, they just really haven't thought about what they want to do with all those pictures when the wedding day is over.

  • What is your budget?

Are you eloping? Having a small, intimate affair on the beach? Looking for a large, formal wedding? Something in between?  Do you want a few framed prints, a simple photobook, or an heirloom photo album?

Photography services generally begin with an hourly rate, depending on how many photographers are needed and then products are added on with discounts for bundling and pre-paying before the wedding,  The average rate for a wedding photographer is $150/hour for 1 photographer and $50/hour for each additional photographer, aka "Second Shooter". Seems like a lot, but remember that for every hour the photographer spends with you on your wedding day, they have an additional 2-3 hours of preparing and cataloging your images into the gallery, editing in photoshop and designing your wedding album.  So, if you are looking for 8 hours of service, the photographer will have another 16-24 hours of work to do before you get your finished product.

Make sure that you know what you are looking for and have a realistic budget in mind for the type, of wedding photography services and products that you want.  This will save you a lot of time and back and forth with the photographer.

In addition, here are some questions to ask the prospective photographers:

  • What is your preferred style of shooting?
  • Can I see samples of your work?
  • Can I see examples of your products?
  • Do you have references?
  • Do you have a standard shot list and can I customize the shot list?
  • Do you provide an in-person wedding consultation?
  • Do you do a live reveal of my photos so that I can relive the experience and get instant answers to my questions?
  • Is a contract required?
  • What is your standard rate for weddings?
  • What "little extras" will you provide as part of your service?
  • Can I customize my wedding package to suit my own needs and budget?
  • How much is required as a down-payment and can I make payments for services and products?
  • Do you have general liability insurance and backup camera/gear.

Once the questions are out of the way, then you have to determine if you like him/her and their personality.  Remember, the photographer you choose will be with you every step of the way on your special day, so just make sure you can have some fun together.

Take a look at our wedding gallery @ www.redbenchphotography.com/wedding-photography. Then, give us a call to ask us about how we can make your wedding day last forever!

Seven Magic Mountains created by Ugo Rondinone.   Twenty minutes outside of Las Vegas this large scale piece of art work is one of a kind.  Created May 11, 2016 this will be the last year you'll be able to see it.  I wonder what they'll do with the large boulders?  Just knock them down?  Why wouldn't they just leave it up?

20170128-Las-Vegas-and-Red-Canyon-958820170128-Las-Vegas-and-Red-Canyon-9588

I struggled to photograph this piece of art.  Not as much as I struggled with why.  I understand that art is supposed to mean something different to everyone.  I guess I just didn't get it.  That's probably why I struggled so much to photograph it.

20170128-Las-Vegas-and-Red-Canyon-958020170128-Las-Vegas-and-Red-Canyon-9580

I think it's more about the placement of the mountains.  Depending on the angle you can see each mountain or clump them all together to make one large grouping. 20170128-Las-Vegas-and-Red-Canyon-20170128-Las-Vegas-and-Red-Canyon-

I think for me it's the vastness of the dessert.  Watching his video he wanted people to look at it's surroundings, not just at the art.  The art is nothing without the dessert.

Digital vs Print https://www.redbenchphotography.com/blog/2016/10/digital-vs-print Family PhotosFamily Photosby Red Bench Photography
When was the last time you printed your favorite photo?  Statistics show that a staggering 53% of consumers haven’t printed a photo in more than 12 months, 70% don't have photo albums, and 42% no longer print photos at all.  When’s the last time you backed up your images from your phone or your computer?  67% don’t actively back up their photos from their phone.  That’s scary especially when 4.5 million phones were stolen or lost in the US in 2014.

Digital media has changed drastically in the last 10 years.  As a wedding photographer, I get a kick out of a bride asking for a CD of their images when they can’t even remember the last time they used a CD themselves.  Nowadays, it’s either a USB or Cloud subscriptions.  Printing has been a stable media for almost 200 years.  I would imagine it will still be around long after I’m dead and gone.  But what if all my photos were just on Facebook or on the “cloud”.  Can my family get to them?  Will all of my images be gone forever and never be seen by my grandchildren?

Printing your favorite images add value to the photograph.  You can touch it and admire it.  Most of all they will remember you even after you are gone.  Soon they will become family heirlooms to be inherited by future generations to come.

Our culture has made a dramatic shift to digital media.  Being digital has improved our lives in many ways.  Being a portrait photographer it’s made my life so much easier from taking the photo to post processing.  But, I have to remind myself of how important it is to print my favorite photos.  I want to encourage all of you to do the same.  There are ways to print directly from your phone.  Click here for some examples.

But that thing about selfies is it’s tough to get the entire family in just an arm’s reach with a cell phone.  Hire a photographer to take your family photos.  Don’t forget to ask about their print packages.  Get some prints for the grandparents of course but then choose a product for you and your family that you can enjoy for many generations.  If you live in Broward County I’m available for both during the week and weekends for family photography sessions.  Christmas is coming up and photos of the kids always make a great gift for the grandparents.

"We should do this more often", I say to my wife and we get a kick out of it every time.  We live in South Florida where the beach is plentiful and the ocean is as blue as the sky.  My only complaint is I don't live closer to the beach.  Even though it only takes me half an hour to drive to the beach we don't go as often as we should.

If you ever want to take photos of the beach, Fort Lauderdale Beach is the place to do it.  There was something special about this palm tree in between 2 other clusters of palm trees.  I framed him close to the center of the image and showed off the big sky.  I placed the horizon in the bottom third of the frame to highlight the sky and the clouds in the background.  Very simple photo.

This background would make for a nice family portrait.   You know how I love to incorporate South Florida's Landscape photography into my family portrait photography.  This scenery would even go nice with a real estate agent's headshot.  Give me a call if you know someone in need of a great photographer!

Modern Day Bride https://www.redbenchphotography.com/blog/2016/10/modern-day-bride Most people don't know that the tradition of the veil and bouquet predate wearing a white dress.  Wearing a white wedding dress didn't come about until 1840 when Queen Victoria decided to wear "The White Dress That Changed Wedding History Forever".
20160911-Leslie-Bridal-8267Modern Day BrideRed Bench Wedding Photography Back then the veil was much thicker and heavier to completely hide the bride's face from the groom especially in the case of arranged marriages.  This is why the father would have to walk her down the aisle to "give her away" so she could find her way.  Concealing the bride's face would also deter bandits from kidnapping her for ransom.  The bride's maids would be dressed in similar outfits to confuse would be kidnappers.

The bouquet used to be edible made of garlic, dill (also known as herb of lust) and other strong spices.  Some believed the arrangements would ward off evil spirits.  After the wedding, the bride and groom would eat the arrangement to increase their sexual desire in order to consummate their marriage.  The days of the plague, they would clutch these herbs over their nose and mouths in a desperate effort to survive.  Over time the modern day bride added pretty floral arrangements to improve the smell and look.

I love the look of the modern day bride and how they have improved these historical traditions for their special day.  This makes the wedding photographer's job easier to make them look so much more beautiful.  Wedding photos and wedding albums are so much more prettier when you can see the bride's face with a nice bouquet of flowers.

116416-400x265-Children_getting_on_school_bus116416-400x265-Children_getting_on_school_bus

As a father and now a grandfather, I want to remind everyone about driving in and around your neighborhood school zones.  Click the photo for a great pdf to share or print out.  I was shocked to hear that there are still children killed by motorists around stopped buses and even school zones.  As motorists we should always be on the lookout for pedestrians, especially the children because they can be so unpredictable.  Too often we get rushed by our busy lives trying to get to where we need to be.  It is a tragedy every time a child dies due to a motorist illegally passing a stopped bus because this terrible death could have been so easily prevented.

If you have children that ride their bikes to school, please take a moment to remind them to be safe while sharing the road with motorists.  Bicyclists have the same rights as a motorist, but they also have the same responsibility to safety.  Bikes are hard to see and speed is too often misjudged.

Be Safe Everyone so we can enjoy another great school year!

Great Wedding Vendors https://www.redbenchphotography.com/blog/2016/8/great-wedding-vendors Weddings are beautiful especially if you hire the right vendors.  With her living in Pennsylvania, she had to rely on her vendors to create the destination wedding of her dreams.

Her day started at the Embassy Suites by Hilton where she was getting ready along with the rest of the bridal party.  The Limo's provided by A Family Limousine arrived promptly with Bride and Groom limos!  The Bride's limo was an elegant white stretch limo that took her and her wedding party first to the venue.  The groom's limo was a sleek black stretch sedan that took him and his groomsmen to follow.

The venue was Pavilion Grille.  From the outside it looks like a large glass exterior office building.  The inside is a luscious greenhouse with multiple fountain ponds and a massive center atrium.  The glass exterior walls let in wonderful natural light that make photographing a wedding a breeze.  The reception is conveniently in the same location just steps away where the guests mingle for cocktail hour while they bring the Bride and Groom down the exquisite glass elevator to make their grand entrance onto the wide open dance floor.

And of course she hired the best Wedding Photographer South Florida has to offer!  She was thrilled when I showed her a sneak peek of her wedding album.  And what's best is she understands the importance of her photos.  Because after her wedding day all that is left are the photos to enhance her memories of her wedding day. Many blessings to you Rosaline and Rooldy!  Thank you for sharing your day with me and all the other wedding vendors that helped make your day special.

Print Your Digitals https://www.redbenchphotography.com/blog/2016/7/print-your-digitals Have you ever thrown out a floppy disc or even a CD? Was it because you just couldn't get the data off it?  Do you even remember what was on it?  Now a days it’s a USB or a digital download.  I’m a photographer and I shoot in raw format sometimes called a digital negative.  I edit these raw files and create jpg’s which are the files that you or one of my bride’s get after their photo session.  If I give them the raw file, they wouldn’t be able to view the image so it has to be processed into something they can view and enjoy.

I fail to understand my customer’s need to have all the digital files from their wedding or even from their family photos.  The digital images of today have no value because people just swipe through them and forget about them.  In a few years they’ll forget where they downloaded them on their computer or their hard drive crashed and destroyed everything on it.  Even if they preserve their USB with all their images, there may not be a computer old enough to view them.  Does anyone have any 3.5” floppy discs?  You’d be hard pressed to find a computer that can read them.  Wouldn’t it be better if you had a wedding album that you can show off.  Better yet, a large framed photo of your family.  These are the documents that stand the test of time and technology.

The video below shows a better example of what I’m talking about.  We live in a digital age no doubt, but don’t forget the true value in printing your images and making it a permanent feature in your home.

Wedding Photography Price Range https://www.redbenchphotography.com/blog/2016/7/wedding-photography-price-range SnapKnot.com has a really good article about the average cost of a wedding photographer around the nation.  See below for the chart and click to go to the article.  The main point is “…even if you're on a tight budget, invest in the best wedding photographer you can afford.”  In other words, hire a wedding photographer you are comfortable with both in cost and in person.
Comparing Wedding Photography Prices
Courtesy of: SnapKnot

My services are more expensive than most but I offer a lot in my packages.  I am more above average cost around the nation especially for Miami/Ft Lauderdale area.  To create a custom package for a bride who wants two photographers all day, a photo album plus all their digitals may cost up to $4,000.  And they pay me a week before the wedding or I don’t show up for their wedding day.  Now if you are thinking that is a crazy price, I am not the right photographer for you.  No hard feelings.  I wish you luck in finding the right photographer for you and your budget.  But if you are wanting to know more about what kind of wedding album and if it’s going to have a custom bound leather backing with an acrylic front cover with the photo of you in an artistic pose showcasing the bridal gown and the bouquet, you are a well-educated bride and we definitely need to talk more about all the details of your wedding to build your perfect wedding album!

Getting back to the cost, why does a wedding photographer cost so much?  And why is there such a broad range in wedding photographer costs?  Some other photographer may only charge a fraction of what I charge.  What’s the old saying?  “You get what you pay for.”  This is especially true for wedding photographers.  If you only pay $300 for a wedding photographer, then you’ll only get low end service with lots of blurry photos.  There are many variables in my costs.  The people who pay for a wedding photographer only gets to see them work for that day.  They don’t see before the wedding day visiting the venue at the same hour the wedding will take place to measure the right light and see where the best spots are to take the formal portraits of the bride and groom.  They don’t see during the wedding tipping the bartender to setup the perfect scene for the groomsmen to take their photo toasting to the groom one last time before he is to be married.  They don’t see after the wedding day, editing photos, making sure all photos have the highest and sharpest resolutions possible for each and every photo being published.  They don’t see the hours going into designing a wedding album for them.  Nor do they see the research that the photographer does contacting photo labs and vetting them for the best quality.  Do you think I would do all this for $300.  I wouldn’t leave the comfort of my couch for $300.  Again, if you think I’m too much then I’m not the right photographer for you.

So you’re still thinking about how to get around not paying for a wedding photographer.  You ask your friend with that really cool camera they got for Christmas to take the photos of your wedding.  You’ve seen some of their pictures on Instagram and think they are pretty good.  There’s a couple of things wrong with that.  First, if he or she really is your friend then wouldn’t you rather he or she enjoy your wedding day as a guest and not as the hired help?  Besides, they may get caught up taking photos of their friends and miss the great shots (or would have been great shots) of the bride.  You’ll get all the digitals from them.  There may even be a couple of hundred photos, of the backs of people’s heads, or of the ground when he misfired his camera, or blurry photos of the bridal party.  And then you notice there are no photos of just the wedding dress or the bride by herself holding the bouquet. What about photos of the groom and his parents who flew in from out of state!  No photos of the ring bearer at all in his cute little tuxedo!  What was I thinking!  You’ll love all the photos and not say anything to your friend about how disappointed you are about missing out on some great memories.

My point is like SnapKnot.com, hire the wedding photographer already!  You deserve it!

Why have a Wedding at all? https://www.redbenchphotography.com/blog/2016/7/Wedding-Reasons There are 3 reasons to have a wedding.  The first is obvious.  It’s a celebration!  It’s where you gather the most important people in your lives in one location and enjoy this special day.  Some cultures celebrate for weeks let alone one night.  The next reason is all about the Bride.  She is the center of everyone’s attention.  The more attention she receives the more everyone realizes how important she is and how valuable she is to the groom.  The last reason to have a wedding is to proclaim their love and vows to each other in front of their God and all the witnesses of the day.  So, if you ignore these reasons to have a wedding, then don’t bother having a wedding at all.  But, if you cherish these reasons, then I want to be there to capture your wedding day.

My marriage to my beautiful wife Kate was a very emotional one.  I cried through most of my vows and I’m not even sure if anyone could hear or even understand me.  They were tears of happiness of course!  It was my first marriage but her second.  This wedding was important to her because she was only married at the Justice of the Peace for her first marriage.  At the time, I wasn’t sure how important the wedding was to me.  All I could see was how much money we were spending!  But now, 25 years later, married to the same beautiful woman, I’m so glad we had the wedding!

Now what I do wish is that we had hired a professional wedding photographer.  We only had Katey’s sister-in-law, Jill, take the photos during the ceremony and some at the reception.  I’m a little embarrassed to show them because they aren’t the best quality.  Don’t get me wrong.  I love these photos.  We were very fortunate Jill was there to capture some of the moments of our wedding.  But the only wedding album we have is the snap shots we took with a Kodak disposable camera and some others Jill took.  We don’t have any of the bride with her dress by herself.  Most of the images are under exposed or blurry.  But again, it’s one of our most precious and valued possession and it brings back so many special memories of our wedding day.

I am sharing my story to emphasize how important it is to hiring a good wedding photographer.  As a wedding photographer, I know how important your day will be especially 25 years from now.  Great photos only get better with time but blurry photos will leave a bad taste in your mouth.  Which photo would you rather have in your wedding album?

Wait Until I lose 10lbs https://www.redbenchphotography.com/blog/2016/7/wait-until-i-lose-10lbs I tried to take a photograph of my daughter the other day while she was in town.  She was ok with letting me photograph her.  I set up the studio where she could see every shot I took so we can talk about what looks good and what she liked.  It was great practice for me.  I thought we had a great session but then she wouldn’t let me print any of the photos or post them to Facebook.  She says she’ll come back and redo them when she’s lost 10 pounds.  I didn’t think anything of it but then I looked around my house and realized I don’t have any recent photos of my daughter.  She always says the same thing.  “Wait until I lose 10 pounds.” Or “Wait until I get my makeup done.”

It’s awful how we get so down on ourselves about how we look in the camera.  You see every little imperfection about yourself but what everyone else sees is a beautiful smile, a sparkle in your eye and a great photograph.  It amazes me that we can see the beauty in everyone else except for our own image.

There is a great article in the Huffington Post and I encourage everyone to read it.   It talks about how we can ruin a wonderful photograph with the comments we make about ourselves instead of recognizing the great moment it captured.  “…How is it possible that a double chin can overpower the beauty of a mother cuddling her child? How does arm fat distract from the perfect shot of a spontaneous hug?”

So instead of looking at your imperfections, look how perfect the photograph really is with you in it.  Besides, in 20 years you’ll look back at that same photo and say, “Look how young and beautiful I was in that picture!”  Photos only get better with time.

p.s. I will obey my daughter's wishes and not post her photo for all to see.  So instead I found a model who loves getting her photos taken, my granddaughter.  I dread the day when she won't let me take her photo!

Wedding Album https://www.redbenchphotography.com/blog/2016/7/wedding-album So, the wedding is over, you’re home from your honeymoon and you’ve gotten all your photos back from your Wedding Photographer.  It’s time to start designing your Wedding Album.  When you create your Wedding Album, you are creating a treasured heirloom that you can share with your children, grandchildren and great grandchildren for years to come! You are creating the first part of your family’s history.  It’s important and should not be taken lightly, but how do you build your Wedding Album?

The very best way to get a high-quality well-designed Wedding Album that captures all of your special moments and tells your love story perfectly, is to have your Professional Wedding Photographer design your Wedding Album.  If you included the album in your Wedding Photography Package, then all you have to do is just approve the work once the Wedding Album is done!  However, if you are a do it your-selfer and want to build your own Wedding Album, we have a few tips for you to create the perfect Wedding Album.

  1. Don't procrastinate. This is a time-consuming task and you will likely spend many hours getting it just right.  Days turn into weeks, weeks into months and months into years.  Before you know it, you’ll be celebrating your 1-year anniversary and still won’t have your Wedding Album!  Make the time and commitment to get it done within the first three months after your wedding.  You’ll be so glad you did on that anniversary date.
  2. Pick your absolute favorites.  It can be a little overwhelming going through a thousand photos.  Yes, I said 1,000 photos!  Sometimes it’s more.  Going through a thousand images can be overwhelming and there is no way to get all of them into an album.  You have to pick the photos you can’t live without.  Select your “must have photos” and see what you’re left with.  Then go back and start the process again.  This will get the overwhelming pile of images down to a manageable selection.  Try and get them down to less than 100.  Yes, I know, from a 1,000 to less than 100 seems like a large selection you are discarding.  Remember, these 100 images are going into an album with 20 to 30 pages.  Each page should not contain more than 2 to 3 images.  Your favorite images may take up 2 pages, or the entire spread! 2-The-Importance-of-a-Wedding-Album2-The-Importance-of-a-Wedding-Album
  3. Scale your Wedding Album with the size of your wedding.  If your wedding was a 4-day extravaganza, then you’re going to need more pages and more images. You may need a few albums like a 3 volume set with 90 pages each.
  4. Tell your story.  Once you’ve culled through your images, place them in chronological order.  Some images may contain a time stamp.  Digitals are easy because they are numbered.  If you had multiple photographers at your wedding be sure they sync their cameras with the same time stamp.  This way all the photographers’ digitals can be sorted chronologically.  If they didn’t you’ll have to sort them manually.
  5. Full page spreads show off the best photos.  Key moments should be represented with a full spread, 2 pages.  Most album makers now can make a seamless spread so when you open the page it’s a huge photo!
  6. Mix it up with shades of Gray and Full Color.  Black and white photos represent a timeless effect.  They are classic, clean and very nostalgic.  But if your wedding was full of color then make sure to show off its full vibrancy.  You can do some pretty amazing things nowadays with color selection.  I know most photographers don’t like this effect but if done correctly it can be a great effect in your Wedding Album.
  7. Lay out one spread at a time.  Each spread is 2 pages.  Make sure the images flow from one page to the next.  It’s all about telling the story of your wedding day.  The flow is more important than the order.  So be sure to place some details along the way so you remember not only the people, but the atmosphere.  Include photos of the flowers, the wedding alter, the rings, the pace settings, the candles, etc. These pictures will help to transport you back in time.  You will be able to smell the flowers and feel the air and excitement. 4-The-Importance-of-a-Wedding-Album4-The-Importance-of-a-Wedding-Album
  8. Choose the cover materials, paper and finishes. Do you want leather, stamped leather, natural leather?  What color? Do you want a printed hard cover, an acrylic photo cover, a metal print cover?  Luster paper, metallic paper? Deep matte, high-gloss, linen texure, canvas texture? Fabric end sheets or paper? Do you want embossed text?  What color?  Do you want gilded pages?  What color? The options are endless and exhausting!  Take the time to make sure that you review all of the options and get exactly the look and feel that you want.  Remember this will last forever!
  9. Send it all off to the Wedding Album printer. Once you have created the perfect Wedding Album, send it all off to the printer.  They will package everything and print it to your specifications.  They can even do additional Photoshop and color correcting of the images, if you like.  The album should take about 3-4 weeks on average to arrive.
  10. Display your album where it can be enjoyed. You’ve put a lot of time and effort into creating your Wedding Album.  Don’t put it up in the bookcase where it will become forgotten and rarely seen.  Display it prominently so that you and others will be invited to pick it up and browse through the pages and walk through the memories over and over again. 5-The-Importance-of-a-Wedding-Album5-The-Importance-of-a-Wedding-Album

If creating your own Wedding Album seems completely overwhelming, don’t worry…you’re not alone. This is a big job with big decisions. That’s why we suggest that you have your Professional Wedding Photographer take care of designing and creating your Wedding Album.  Your Professional Wedding Photographer has greater access to professional photography labs and Wedding Album vendors.  They have spent hours reviewing, contacting, and talking to many vendors to ensure high-quality and the best options and materials.  Your Professional Wedding Photographer has the know-how and experience to put all of the moments and details of your big day into a beautiful heirloom Wedding Album.  This piece of history will serve as a lasting reminder of your perfect day for years to come!

"F" Words https://www.redbenchphotography.com/blog/2016/6/three-f-words I try not to use the obvious “F” word.  I now replace it with better “F” words.  These “F” words help me grow and get better at portrait and wedding photography.  I hope these words can be helpful to you as well.

Faith is the first “F” word.  Have faith and believe in yourself and what you are doing!  Too many times we doubt ourselves and this leads to poor self-esteem and self-worth.  For example, the scariest thing for me is putting myself out there for the world to judge.  Photography can be so subjective and to have someone tell you your image is not deserving of a merit can be heartbreaking!  I believe I am on the right track with my photography with constantly trying to improve on my portrait work and wedding photography.  This year will be my first entry into a competition.  I have faith that I will grow and get better with helpful critiques from my peers, other master photographers and especially my clients.

Red Bench PhotographyFaithHave Faith and Believe in Yourself

Focus is key in portrait and wedding photography.  Focus will lead the viewers eyes to what matters.  Otherwise their eyes will wonder all over the photograph and the viewer will struggle with what to focus on.  It’s the same with your goals and everyday tasks.  Without clear, precise and directional focus, you’ll be frustrated and not accomplish anything you wanted to get done.  I’m a photographer first but sometimes I go through an entire day without picking up my camera simply because I have lost focus on the tasks I needed to get done first.  I start with editing an image but then I start working on a blog or I’ll practice putting.  I lost my focus but I can get it back, sometimes.  I just need to remind myself of what counts and what matters.

Red Bench PhotographyFocus on What Matters and What CountsWithout Focus the viewer is lost

Have faith, have focus, but most importantly, have Fun!  Otherwise, what’s the point.  My wife always says, “If you aren’t Happy, GET Happy!”  Find your happiness.  My happiness is taking portraits of everyday people.  I make people smile.  If they smile, I smile then we are all having fun!  It’s the best job I’ve ever had!

Fort Lauderdale Photo Spots https://www.redbenchphotography.com/blog/2016/6/fort-lauderdale-photo-spots Since we live in a vacation hot spot, I thought I'd share some of my location secrets of where I shoot around Fort Lauderdale/Broward County.

  1. Tree Tops Park - I moved here from Savannah, GA and the biggest thing I miss there is the incredible photos of the plantation houses and the huge canopy oak trees.  Tree Tops offers that same feel with the large oak trees by the treehouse.  This is great for engagement photos, family portraits, and I even photographed a wedding there once.  So beautiful!  It has a lot of different settings to get multiple photographs at the lake, trees, and wood bridge.  If you’re a hobbyist, it has great areas for wildlife by the north west side of the park.  There is a wooden walkway that takes you through lush swamp where you can take photos of turtles, dragon flies, and even ospreys.
  2.  Artspark at Young CircleIn the heart of Downtown Hollywood, FL, Artspark at Young Circle offers great photo spots.  The fountain can give a unique backdrop.  The trees are lush and offers great shade.  Perfect for family photos you could spend half the day under the shade tree and have a picnic while a photographer takes your photographs.  If you forgot your picnic basket there’s a ton of food trucks that will give you a variety of lunch orders.
  3. Fort Lauderdale Beach Park – Of course there will be a beach as a photographic hot spot.  I prefer to start early morning before sunrise.  Sunrise photos on the beach are amazing.  It’s easy to get sunset photos on the beach but only if you live on the west coast.  Remember, we live on the east coast and the sun sets in the west, pretty much over the everglades.  So if you are willing to start before the crack of dawn I’m your photographer that will take those amazing sunrise photos.  After, we can take more photos on their iconic wave wall.  We can do sitting on the wall and even walking on the wall all with the ocean and beach sand as your backdrop. Fort Lauderdale Beach ParkSunrise PhotoRed Bench Photography
  4. FAT Village - FAT Village Art Walk Represents the Flagler Arts & Technology District introducing streets lined with Welcoming Art Studios, Galleries, Performers, Urban Planners, Graffiti Artists, Photography & Painting Studios, Designers, Coffee Shops, and More! Located in the Heart of Downtown Fort Lauderdale! Held on EVERY Last Saturday of the Month~ Rain or Shine Starting at 7pm to 11pm!  The Event is Very Pet Friendly!  It has hip graffiti walls just like Miami’s Wynwood Walls for your next senior portrait session. It’s also situated off of the railroad tracks for a different photographic look.  Definitely a cool place to do an engagement photo shoot.
  5. Downtown Las Olas – This is great for engagement shoots and even senior sessions.  Not so much for the kids because there is really nothing for them to do.  There are a lot of hidden gems in plain sight for this area. Riverside Hotel is the perfect place to start.  This is a photographer’s hot spot especially for weddings.  Then walk over to 9th and get your photos taken in front of the Hot Pink barn doors outside of Chico’s.  It’s unique look and architecture is a great backdrop of any engagement couple. Esplanade ParkFamily PhotographyRed Bench Photography
  6. Sugar Sand ParkI am reluctant to put this on my list of hot spots because the best parts of the park are under renovation.  Between the playground and the carousel, you’ll get great photos of the kids.  So when the renovations are done this is a must do.  I’ll check back periodically to see when it’s in full operation and let you know.  Their website says it will reopen in the Fall of 2016. They are completely redoing the wood castle.  I don’t know how else to describe it other than a castle.
  7. Esplanade Park – I know, I know.  You’re thinking, “Not another PARK!”  It’s not so much the park but where it’s situated.  It’s across the street for the Museum of Discovery and right next to the Broward Center for Performing Arts.  The Broward Center does some amazing decorations during the holidays especially around Christmas.  This will be perfect for your next family Christmas Card to send out to all your friends and relatives.  They’ll be so jealous of what amazing photos you captured of your family.
  8. 17th St Causeway Bridge – Meet me under the bridge downtown.  Yes, I know it seems like a weird and mysterious place to photograph an engagement couple but trust me.  Your photographs will be like no other.  The bridge offers shade so it’s ok to do it rain or shine, day and night.  Night shots are spectacular with the downtown lights.  If you are up for it, you can walk to the peak and get some pretty amazing photographs of the skyline.
  9. Everglades National Park – This is where you come to get the sunset photos.  Beach for sunrise but the everglades for the sunsets.  Just the vast openness and big colorful skies make it worth the trip for a photo opportunity. The best time for photographs (in my opinion) is from 5 to 35 minutes after the actual sunset so don't leave too early! Tip: Cloudy days can have spectacular sunsets, don't give up until its dark! It’s also home to the Gator Boys Alligator Rescue, a safe haven for many of the captured nuisance alligators featured on Animal Planet's hit show.
  10. My Own Back Yard – You’ll know what I mean if you live in South Florida.  Pick your favorite photo spot and tell me about it.  I’m always looking for new and exciting areas to photograph for families and engagement couples.

By the way, one of these places is not in Broward County.  Tell me which one and I'll give you half off your next family portrait or engagement session.
